It is believed that the name Cape Broyle is derived from the Portuguese word brolle, meaning to roar, and refers to a ledge of sunken rock jutting out from the cape causing white water to form at the bay's entrance. However, despite this Portuguese influence, it was in fact the Irish who are credited with giving the community its official start in the 1780s.
A vibrant community with a rich fishing history, present day Cape Broyle continues to nuture its ties to the sea. The main employer in town is a fish processing facility that provides employment not only to Cape Broyle residents, but to those of neighbouring communities as well. Meanwhile, recent years have seen welcome economic diversification into other areas such as manufacturing and eco-tourism.
Due to its unique coastline, Cape Broyle has become a highly prized destination for sea kayaking. Within the sheltered harbour, kayakers can paddle through sea caves and under waterfalls and, in the right season, get up close and personal with whales, seabirds and icebergs.
Located just 64 kilometers south of St. John's on the Irish Loop, Cape Broyle offers newcomers an opportunity to work and play in a safe and beautiful environment.
