Originally named Whittle's Bay in honour of one of the first European inhabitants to the area, it was cleverly referred to as Whittle-less Bay when that family returned to England, and then eventually shortened to Witless Bay as it is known today.

For centuries Witless Bay has been dependent on the fishery and still today it plays a central role in the towns economy with a crab processing plant employing aproximately 250 residents from the town and the surrounding area. Meanwhile, the economy of Witless Bay has diversified in recent years to include tourism, farming, and service industries. As well, many residents commute to St. John's or work in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Like most of the towns on the Irish Loop, Witless Bay is a scenic coastal town with incredible ocean views and amazing natural wonders right on the doorstep. The nearby Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is home to and estimated 2 million seabirds, including the largest Atlantic Puffin Colony in North America.
